Helen Ballentine’s debut album “Quiet The Room” is a quiet, touching work. A journey through our physical and spiritual worlds. It’s about the intensity of a child’s experience, with past and present mixing in this mix of electronic, ambient, folk and rock. The brooding pieces were recorded with producer Andrew Sarlo at Chicken Shack Studio in upstate New York, near Ballentine’s hometown.

“We wanted every song to have that little sparkle, but also a sense of crumbling,” she says. Sometimes it’s about naked fear (“Whatever Fits Together”), then about the difficulties of getting closer to others (“It’s Like A Secret”). Understanding means overcoming barriers and leaving a part of yourself behind, say the dollhouse songs on “Quiet The Room”. Childhood also means that beauty and horror can exist in the same place.

In June, Skullcrusher will present their new songs at three concerts in Germany. ROLLING STONE presents.
