A look at the test run
While we continue to wait for the competition to start, it’s worth taking a look at the test run. There, Nika Prevc made a clear exclamation mark and, despite two less attempts, made it clear that victory would only come through her. With a distance of 135.5 meters, she ended up in second place, more than 20 points ahead of Selina Freitag. The Norwegian Anna Odine Strøm took third place. The wind was already strong during the rehearsal and some athletes had to wait a long time before their jumps.

Postponed to 9:30 a.m
The competition in Zhangjiakou was actually supposed to start in a few minutes, but the jury decided at short notice to postpone the first round. The plan is now to start around half an hour late. The reason for the delay is excessive wind conditions.

Two Austrians
The Austrian team is only traveling with two athletes for the competitions in China. Lisa Eder recently presented herself in impressive form and took second place in each of the last four World Cup competitions. She can therefore also have legitimate hopes of a top result in Zhangjiakou, even if smaller jumps usually suit her a little better due to her strong jumping technique. Julia Mühlbacher also confidently qualified for the competition in eleventh place and will compete today with the aim of finishing in the top ten.

DSV athletes with a chance on the podium
The German athletes also presented themselves well on the ski jump in Zhangjiakou. Agnes Reisch and Selina Freitag in particular are among the closest favorites for the podium. Katharina Schmid, however, has not yet been able to get used to the system. But a top ten place is also within the realm of possibility for them. Juliane Seyfarth, Anna Hollandt and Emely Torazza complete the DSV squad.

Can Prevc be beat?
The big favorite traveling to China is none other than the big dominator of the winter, Nika Prevc. The Slovenian has won the last four World Cups and has remained untouched in Zhangjiakou so far. On Thursday she was confidently ahead of the competition in training and qualification. In front of the home crowd, all eyes are of course on Zeng Ping, who recently delivered strong performances in the World Cup and was on the podium for the first time in Oberstdorf on January 1st. Nozomi Maruyama from Japan is also worth keeping an eye on, even if she hasn’t been able to show the stable performances from the beginning of the season recently.

Large hill for the first time in China
After the ski jumpers competed in two competitions on the normal hill last year when they returned to the Olympic hills in 2022, this season they will be competing on the large hill for the first time. For the athletes, these are the first competitions from the large facility at the highest international level. At the 2022 Olympic Games, the Zhangjiakou ski jumpers were only allowed to compete on the normal hill.
