The Union won the Bundestag election. The German ski jumping icon Sven Hannawald welcomes this-and talks about the now challenges.

The German citizens have chosen and rely on the Union at the upcoming government. This has won the Bundestag election and, after counting, is 28.6 percent of the vote. CDU boss Friedrich Merz will probably be the next Chancellor according to Olaf Scholz (SPD). Germany’s ski jumping icon Sven Hannawald supports the result.

The former German ski jumping star and four-hill tour winner (2001/02) says in an interview with T-Online on Monday morning: “I gave the outside world that I am a clear Union voter Democracy has gone wrong last four years.

“Has been completely driven onto the wall for the past four years”

With a view to the traffic light government, consisting of the SPD, the Greens and FDP, Hannawald adds with regard to the economy: “This has been completely driven onto the wall for the past four years. I am surprised that a Robert Habeck with his poster ‘ I don’t know about it. The Federal Minister of Economics and Chancellor candidate of the Greens had promoted a word “confidence. A person. A word” before the election.

Hannawald continues: “Nevertheless, I’m glad that at least the captain simply comes from the Union, or then with Friedrich Merz from the CDU.” Whoever the CDU will form a coalition is not yet clear. However, everything indicates an alliance with the SPD because the Union had excluded cooperation with the AfD. The former German ski jumper also clearly positions itself: “The AfD is a no-go”. In addition, Hannawald believes that “it is not about individual ego who then want to profile themselves to the outside, but that there is a route towards the economy”. According to the 50-year-old, this should also come from the CDU because she got the most votes.

The goal must be that “the companies in Germany see light again in order to be simply more independent of things that happen in the world. Like Trump with his tariffs, for example,” said Hannawald with a view of the US president. With regard to the transatlantic relationship between Germany and the USA, the successful ex-athlete appreciates the CDU candidate for chancellor.

Hannawald says: “I notice Mr. Merz, without knowing him, that it is clear to him that you can position yourself, but also sit in a boat at the end of the day.” You also have to get along with an America guided by Trump – Scholz does not trust it. At Merz, too, he is sure that he and Trump “don’t become friends”. But at least one has to talk to each other. Hannawald continues: “Mr. Merz I notice that he also has his question mark on his face at Trump, but he knows that solutions have to be found. And best for Germany.”

While the SPD crashed to 16.4 percent and thus achieved the worst federal election result in its history, the AfD, which is largely right -wing extremist, comes to 20.8 percent and thus provides the second strongest faction. The left, which has an increase in 8.8 percent, is also pleased. For Hannawald, the success of the left is also related to the development of new platforms: “New portals such as TikTok or social media are approached. The left has forced that. She saw how it works on the AfD.”

He sees it “also a warning sign to the normal parties that they wake up and try not only on the normal voters – which they have felt like for decades -” said Hannawald. He therefore calls on the other parties to also rely on social media “to win over the new, young voters who become important in a few years”. It is about “picking up and not being blinded and not being blinded and choosing parties that have no idea how Germany should go forward,” says the ski flight world champion from 2000 and 2002.
