Ski jumping: DSV star has to cancel World Cup

After the first World Cups of the new ski jumping season in Ruka, Finland and Lillehammer, Norway, the DSV Adler are heading home this weekend. However, a ski jumper has to cancel the competitions in Klingenthal at short notice.

Ski jumper Philipp Raimund will not be taking part in the home World Cup in Klingenthal, Saxony, as the DSV announced on Thursday afternoon.

The 23-year-old from SC Oberstdorf is suffering from an infection and therefore cannot compete. The coaching staff decided not to make a subsequent nomination because the ski jumpers in question are already on their way to the Continental Cup in Lillehammer, Norway.

Only five German ski jumpers are starting in Klingenthal: Andreas Wellinger from SC Ruhpolding, second in the overall World Cup behind the Austrian Stefan Kraft, third-placed Pius Paschke from WSV Kiefersfelden, Stephan Leyhe from SC Willingen (sixth place in the overall World Cup), Karl Geiger from SC Oberstdorf (seventh place) and Martin Hamann from SG Nickelhütte Aue (20th place).

Ski jumping star Wellinger is looking forward to the home game

Raimund, who is in 13th place in the rankings with 87 points so far, will now hope to be able to climb the ski jump again in Engelberg, Switzerland (December 16th and 17th).

Andreas Wellinger, who was so convincing on the first World Cup weekends, is now looking forward to the first home game of the season. “Klingenthal is always cool. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off,” said the two-time Olympic champion in advance.

However, the ski jump in Klingenthal has not yet been the place of great success for the DSV Adler. No German has yet won a World Cup in Klingenthal, and Wellinger didn’t achieve anything more than second place in November 2013. But the 28-year-old sees an advantage: “We have been training in Klingenthal in the last few months and also competed in the German championships on this hill.”
