Christopher Grotheer celebrated a successful return to the Skeleton World Cup. The Beijing Olympic champion made it to the podium in Winterberg and had to admit defeat, among others, to Brit Matt Weston, who further extended his lead in the overall World Cup.
When he reached the finish line, his first thanks went to the doctors. “Thanks for getting me there”said Grotheer. The man from Wernigerrode suffered an adductor injury during training before Christmas and had to miss the races in Sigulda. At the comeback in Winterberg he returned with a third place.
Above all, his slow start was the Olympic champion’s downfall. In the end he was 0.88 seconds behind the winner Matt Weston from Great Britain (1:53.12 minutes). The Austrian Samuel Maier came second (+0.58 seconds).
Grotheer came third in the overall World Cup
Felix Keisinger, the second best German, missed the podium by fourteenths of a second (+1.27 seconds). Alexander Jungk finished tenth (+1.89 seconds) after a weak first run. Lukas Nydegger completed the German result in 13th place (+2.09 seconds).
Grotheer is in third place in the overall World Cup (1,100 points). The two leading Brits Matt Weston (1,255 points) and Marcus Wyatt (1,197 points) are threatening to escape.
