Social media influencer Sita Salminen takes a stand on the ongoing racism debate on her Instagram account.

Salminen has shared some of the racist comments he has received in his publication. The messages highlight his Asian background.

Salminen’s mother was born and lived in Thailand. Strait has also talked about his Chinese roots on social media. He has written that he is genetically half Chinese, as his maternal grandparents once moved from China to Thailand.

– Racism is a system. It is not just the hostility of individual juntas, but it is a systematic ideology with a long history and at the core of which is the power of whiteness, Salminen writes.

According to Salminen, racism is not always manifested as concrete thoughts, but even unnoticed in people’s attitudes.

– It is good to resign from racism, but at the same time also to be aware that we have all adopted thought patterns even without wanting to.

Recently, several MPs have published pictures in which they imitated the former Miss Finland, From Sarah Dzafce widespread image. In the pictures, one stretches one’s own eyes in a racist, degrading way.

– If we lived in a world where there was no racism, it could be that stretching the eyes would be a neutral thing, Salminen writes.

– But because of racism, Asian eyes are seen as abnormal. Due to racism, “crooked” eyes have been made fun of, mockery has been made a means of discrimination and othering.

– It’s no coincidence that the comments on those pictures repeatedly mention eyes.

He points out how in the messages he receives, another racist feature also repeats itself, i.e. denigration through the sexualization of Thai people.

– It has frustrated me to see comments related to this commotion “There’s nothing wrong with crooked eyes”. Well shit, of course not. We Asians don’t think so, but our characteristics have been harnessed and twisted into weapons of racism.

The recent racism uproar has made Salminen feel a sense of community with other people of Asian background. In his publication, he thanks everyone who has spoken on the subject.

– I am so so so proud that I have Thailand and China in me in terms of language, culture and appearance, he concludes.
