From the stars on the track, between bikes and motors, to the blue triumph of the Games with the silver fairies and the world champion Alice D’Amato: the Gazzetta weekly celebrates the great successes of the last 12 months

December 27 – 8.29pm – MILAN

It was a year to remember, in sport, and on the threshold of the new one Sportweek will refresh it for you with the traditional issue with the most beautiful photos of 2024. You can find it on newsstands on Saturday 28 December (as always with the Gazzetta for 2.50 euros in combined), and the cover is dedicated to Jannik Sinner, the undisputed protagonist from January, with the victory of his first Slam in Australia, until the end of November with the double of the Finals and the second Davis Cup consecutive. In between, the second Slam at the US Open and above all the first place in the ATP ranking achieved in June, the first Italian to do so.

champions on the track

The other protagonist of 2024 was the new Cannibal, Tadej Pogacar, the Slovenian capable of winning – almost always crushing his opponents with breakaways and uncontainable tears – Giro, Tour, two monument classics such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Giro di Lombardy, plus the World Championship, the first cyclist in history to achieve such a top five. Find shots of their exploits in Saturday’s Sportweek together with those of other champions who have shone this year, from Charles Leclerc winner of “his” two Grands Prix – the home one in Monaco and the red house one in Monza – to Max Verstappen who won his fourth consecutive World Championship, to remain in Formula 1.

blue games

The big event of 2024 was naturally the Paris Olympics, where Italy did itself particularly honorable with women: two special golds were the first at the Games in artistic gymnastics with the twenty-one year old Alice D’Amato and in volleyball with the Velasco women’s national team. But we also remember those of the eternal Simone Biles always in gymnastics, of the serial auction record holder Armand Duplantis and of the American Noah Lyles in the queen race, the 100 meters, where Marcell Jacobs finished in 5th place. But our sprinter earned honor at the European Championships in Rome, where Lorenzo Simonelli also won in the 110 hurdles.

the other stars

Among many spectacular moments, in this special issue of our magazine you will also be able to admire the second star of Inter and the personal triumph of Lautaro Martinez in the Copa America won by Argentina, that of Ademola Lookman with the hat-trick in the Europa League final which gave Atalanta their first international trophy; Travis Kelce “rewarded” by his girlfriend Taylos Swift after his success at the Superbowl with Kansas City and Alcaraz more aristocratically by Princess Kate at Wimbledon. These are just some of the symbolic moments of a year that is about to end with the 40th birthday of a great basketball player, the timeless LeBron James who, after the Olympic gold with the United States in Paris, fulfilled his dream: playing together to his son Bronny with the Lakers, the first basketball player to do so in the NBA, an icon of sport to whom we dedicate his own service in our ever-present columns. His birthday is on Monday: so best wishes to him and to the readers of Sportweek for an excellent 2025 full of successes.
