Jannik Sinner only needed three wins to win the “Six Kings Slam”. For this he received a hefty sum of prize money.
A clear victory against the world number one and a special kind of payday: Jannik Sinner prevailed at the “Six Kings Slam” invitation tournament in Saudi Arabia. In the final, the world number two defeated his long-time rival Carlos Alcaraz 6:2, 6:4.
Sinner had only been able to win against the Spaniard twice in the last nine encounters – most recently in the Wimbledon semi-finals this year.
The sporting value of the show tournament is limited. There are neither world ranking points nor an official title. The financial reward is even greater: Sinner received $4.5 million for his final victory. The 24-year-old and the other five top players – including Alexander Zverev – were guaranteed $1.5 million just for taking part. Three matches were enough for prize money that even exceeds Grand Slam tournaments.
The event was broadcast by the streaming service Netflix and opened up new marketing opportunities – an aspect that was highlighted by the organizers. The tournament is still criticized. Observers see it as part of a strategy by Saudi Arabia to use sporting events to distract attention from the human rights situation in the country.
