Suspension against Real

©IMAGO

FC Barcelona just avoided another setback in the Spanish championship thanks to a late goal. Former national coach Hansi Flick’s team won 2-1 (1-1) at home against FC Girona. The match winner was Ronald Araujo with his winning goal in the third minute of injury time.

Previously, former Dortmund player Axel Witsel (20th) equalized Pedri’s lead (13th) for Girona. Flick was sent to the stands by the referee immediately before Araujo’s redeeming goal for complaining and is therefore not allowed to stand on the sidelines in the Clásico on Sunday next week at Real Madrid.

With the win, the defending champion, who was missing the injured striker Robert Lewandowski, among others, took the lead in the table again, ahead of Real, at least until Sunday. Before the international break, Barcelona suffered two competitive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla FC.
