Champions League participants Tottenham avoided relegation from the Premier League on the last match day – to the chagrin of West Ham United.
Tottenham Hotspur had the big fiasco on the last matchday Premier League averted. The Champions League participant won 1-0 (1-0) against Everton FC and ended the season in 17th place, one place above the relegation places. Bayern loanee Joao Palhinha (43rd minute) scored the goal of the day on Sunday.
In the event of a defeat, the catastrophe would actually have occurred, because pursuers West Ham United defeated Leeds United with 3:0 (0:0). The goals were scored by Taty Castellanos (67th), Jarrod Bowen (79th) and Callum Wilson (90th + 4).
The “Spurs” but remained steadfast against Everton. Even when everyone in the stadium knew about West Ham’s lead and it was clear that a defeat would mean relegation, Tottenham hardly allowed any chances. The victory was well deserved and so the “Spurs” saved their two-point lead over West Ham to the finish. Antonin Kaninsky made an outstanding save in stoppage time.
Rescue under Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham changed coaches twice during the season. Thomas Frank had to leave in February, and his successor Igor Tudor only managed one win out of seven competitive games with the expensively assembled squad. Under Roberto De Zerbi, the “Spurs” got the points they needed to stay in the league.
It is the second season in a row that Tottenham has finished in 17th place. The club did not qualify for the Champions League through the Premier League table, but through victory in the Europa League.
