Sara Doorsoun puts an end to national team football. The decision of the defender of Eintracht Frankfurt comes at a surprising time.
Defender Sara Doorsoun ended her career in the German national football team just before the European Championship. “I am very grateful for the great memories and moments that I was able to experience with the national team,” said the 33-year-old from Eintracht Frankfurt in a DFB announcement. “With all my heart, I wish my team only the best. The girls should show everyone and above all themselves how good they are.”
DoorSoun has long committed to promoting children with a migration background: the father of the Cologne native comes from Iraq, the mother from Turkey.
For the European Championship “only on call”
She played her first of 59 caps in 2016, her last Tuesday, when she was substituted against Austria at 6-0 in Vienna. At Eintracht, the ex-Wolfsburg native continues in the Bundesliga.
“The fact that it happened before the tournament in summer was not the plan. After I was told that I was only on demand for the tournament, I decided to end my career in the national team after almost 10 years,” DOORSUN wrote on Instagram. However, this was not a headless or defiant decision.
Wück regrets decision
The Olympic third of 2024 and EM second of 2022 belonged to the DFB squad for many years. Before the nomination on Thursday for the European Championship in Switzerland (July 2 to July 27), Doorsoun was considered a wobble candidate.
“Unfortunately, in the past few months, she was thrown back in a decisive phase of preparation for the tournament in the past few months, so we had intended for the extended EM squad,” said national coach Christian Wück. He regretted that Doorsoun ends their career in the national team, but respect their decision.
