An incentive to buy a new electric car will be on the brink from next year: the liberation from vehicle tax. This in turn could affect the paragraph of the authors such as BMW, VW & Co.
From the beginning of the year to newly approved electric cars could no longer benefit from this relief. There is still no decision on an extension in the federal government.
The President of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Hildegard Müller, said that the coalition must ensure that the vehicle tax exemption for pure electric vehicles must be extended as soon as possible, as promised in the coalition agreement. “The tax exemption has proven itself as an effective incentive to buy for electric vehicles, but would no longer apply for new registrations from 1.1.2026 – with considerable consequences for the further ride of e -mobility for cars and commercial vehicles.”
Unclear for e-car customers
A spokesman for Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) said that the extension of the limited motor vehicle tax exemption for pure electric vehicles was agreed in the coalition agreement by 2035. “The implementation is currently being examined.” The “autodialog” announced by the federal government should advise further measures to strengthen the automotive industry. Klingbeil announced concrete decisions in the Bundestag.
According to the government circles, the autogiput should take place on October 9th. Accordingly, several ministers, the prime ministers of the federal states with auto industry, the large producers and suppliers as well as representatives of the employee side.
A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Transport said that the department basically considered an extension of the vehicle tax exemption necessary because this creates an incentive for private buyers. However, the Federal Ministry of Finance is responsible.
This means that potential e-car customers currently have no clarity on how to proceed-whether a newly approved electric car is released from the vehicle tax from 2026 and whether this applies until 2035.
Applicable regulation
If pure e-cars are approved by December 31, 2025, they do not have to pay car taxes from the first registration-this is limited until December 31, 2030. According to ADAC, the regulation has been available since May 2011. According to ADAC, the owner of pure e-cars does not have to pay for up to ten years-since this tax exemption is limited by December 31, 2030, buyers of e-car 10-year period no longer exploit. If the e-car changes the owner or the owner, according to ADAC, the tax exemption is passed on.
In their coalition agreement, the CDU, CSU and SPD have announced that it will promote e-mobility with a different measure-including the vehicle tax exemption for electric cars by 2035.
Auto industry demands planning security
VDA President Müller said: “If the vehicle tax exemption expires at the end of the year, fully electrical vehicles would even be taxed higher than plug-in hybrid-a contradiction that the coalition urgently has to dissolve in order to avoid uncertainty and retention.” Consumers and companies immediately need planning security.
If the tax exemption fell away, that would be “a blow to the account” for the German car trade, says the President of the Central Association of German Motor Vehicle Industry (ZDK), Thomas Peckruhn. Already a high reluctance to private customers, it would be even more difficult without the tax advantage, especially since the reduction in electricity tax promised before the election did not come. Such impulses are needed for customers.
According to the current regulation, according to the ADAC from the eleventh year after first registration or at the latest from January 1, 2031 or in the event of new registration, the vehicle tax for electric cars up to 3.5 tons according to the permissible total weight will be calculated from 2026. According to the ADAC, the annual vehicle tax is then up to a total weight of 2000 kilograms of 5.625 euros, up to 3000 kilograms 6.01 euros and up to 3500 kilograms of 6.39 euros. “It remains cheaper than comparable combustion models.” An example: The permissible total weight is at the Electric car BMW i3 of the first generation (market launch 2013) 1630 kilos, the tax therefore amounts to at least 50 euros.
The ADAC called the liberation from the vehicle tax a “further set screw” to support electromobility. “However, attractive acquisition prices or cheaper charging current as well as the possibility of being able to load the electric car close to home are much more important.”
High run of e-mobility
The traffic sector misses legally specified climate goals. E-mobility should be a central component to reduce CO2 emissions in road traffic. The new registrations of electric cars are currently increasing. But the political goal that was previously mentioned that 15 million fully electric vehicles in Germany should be on the roads in Germany by 2030 seems to be a long way off. At the beginning of 2025, the inventory was around 1.65 million cars according to data from the Federal Motor Transport Office-with a total of 49.3 million cars.
What are the consequences of changes in funding
The fact that the buyers of electric cars are sensitive to changes in the funding takes a look at the statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Office. There are a few very strong rashes in the share of electric cars in the new registrations: in December 2023, 2022 and 2021 and in August 2022, the shares shot up – only to rush directly afterwards and to weaken for some time.
These rashes coincide exactly with the end of the premium in December 2023, the restriction to private buyers from September 2023, the reduction at the end of 2022 and the long uncertainty to extend the premium at the end of 2021. So it makes sense that it could come similar this time. A rather stable upward trend had recently developed after the strong fluctuations.
