A measure that has been “well received by the communities”, as stated by the Government delegate against Gender Violence, Victoria Rosell

Two of the seven fatalities from gender-based violence last August were killed when they were going to pick up the equipment to their houses, in order to definitively break the coexistence with their aggressor. It is a relatively frequent situation and therefore a factor of risk. Hence, the Ministry of Equality has raised this Monday to the communities, the prosecutor’s office, Interior and Justice, in the crisis committee held to analyze case by case the seven sexist crimes of August, that women be provided with specialized accompaniment when go to pick up their belongings at home after a breakup with an abuser, even if they have not filed a complaint.

Currently, it is common that when the victim files a complaint and the judge orders a restraining order, plainclothes police officers accompany her or him to collect their belongings from the house where the couple previously lived, in order to avoid new conflicts. in the distribution of things and new episodes of sexist violence. It would be about “institutionalizing” this accompaniment even if the victim does not file a complaint, by the specialized services of support to the victims or by the local police, if they have knowledge of the situation.

The Equality proposal has been “well received by the communities”, as stated by the Government delegate against this structural problem, Vicky Rosell, at the end of the crisis committee. Likewise, the ministry led by Irene Montero has once again asked the Department of the Interior to review the gun ownership policygiven that six of the 40 murders from January to August have been carried out with a firearm

These permits are already denied to people with criminal records, gender violence or addictions, but Equality wants that, even if they have been granted, they retireautomatically, to those men who are denounced for gender violence.

It is something that Equality requested in June, when the third crisis committee was held to analyze a rebound in sexist violence and that is still pending execution. The Executive and the communities agreed in July 2022 to meet every time the five sexist murders are exceeded in a month, with all the institutions involved, and since then five committees have been held where various proposals have been formulated.

the victims of august

The first victim of gender-based violence in August was a 27-year-old woman whose throat was slit by her husband in the Pescadería neighborhood of Almería. The woman, who had not filed previous complaints for ill-treatment against her partner, had one daughter and two sons minors. In 24 hours, two more were added to this murder: that of a 31-year-old woman in Pozoblanco (Córdoba) and another 91-year-old in Valle Guerra (Tenerife).

In Madrid, another 50-year-old woman was murdered by her husband, while the fifth victim was a 39-year-old resident of Motril (Granada). The last two women murdered at the hands of their partners or ex-partners met last Wednesday, when a 36-year-old woman lost her life in the Salamanca municipality of Béjar and another 58-year-old was murdered by her ex-husband in Alzira (Valencia).
