Spanish defender César Azpilicueta is ending his career after the season. The 36-year-old announced on Friday morning that Sevilla FC’s game against Celta Vigo on Saturday evening would be his last. “Today I would like to inform you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After living my dream for so many years, it is time for me to start a new chapter in my life,” Azpilicueta wrote on Instagram.
In the summer, Azpilicueta moved from Atlético Madrid to Sevilla FC on a free transfer. In the current season he has appeared on the pitch 16 times for the Andalusians. Sevilla is the fifth ahead of the right-back, having already played for Atlético Madrid, Chelsea FC, Olympique Marseille and CA Osasuna. In total, he made 761 appearances at club level and 44 appearances for the Spanish national team.
Azpilicueta played most of the games for Chelsea. He played 508 times for the Londoners between 2012 and 2023 – sixth place in history. He won nine titles with the Blues, including the 2021 Champions League and the 2015 and 2017 English championships. There are also three cups with Olympique Marseille and two European championship titles with Spanish junior teams. He had his highest career market value between March 2018 and June 2019 at 40 million euros.
