A number of people brought a Prince’s flag. Wybren van Haga (BVNL) and Pepijn Houwelingen (FvD), among others, addressed the crowd.
According to our reporter, residents from Uithoorn in particular came to the town hall this evening.
The demonstrators want to prevent asylum seekers from being received in their municipality. The municipality of Uithoorn decided to take in about 250 people. An objection can still be filed against that decision.
In addition, the group also demonstrates against the arrival of the asylum seekers’ center in the neighboring municipality of Amstelveen. That municipality wants to set up an asylum center on the border with Uithoorn, causing opponents to fear that asylum seekers will head to Uithoorn.
Dutch flag
Prior to the protest, tension had already risen in Uithoorn after a number of residents hung Dutch flags to express their dissatisfaction. The municipality decided last weekend to remove all flags that were not hanging in the designated places.
Wrong before
Last month, things also went wrong at a protest in Uithoorn when a group of aggressive demonstrators wanted to enter the town hall where a committee meeting on, among other things, asylum policy was taking place.
