Setback Alkmaar pride week, portraits destroyed of exhibition intersex people

Several portraits of the outdoor exhibition ‘Intersekse-1 op de 90’ on the Stationsplein in Alkmaar were destroyed yesterday. It is not clear whether it is vandalism or a targeted hate action. Miriam van der Have of the interest group for gender diversity (NNID) fears the latter. “These destructions unfortunately stem from hatred of a minority that cannot cope with this.”

The outdoor exhibition of the Open Mind Foundation tells the story of 21 intersex people between the ages of 2 and 81. Journalist Lara Aerts interviewed those portrayed. The destruction does not surprise her in the least. “This happens more often. The Netherlands has again dropped a place in the European ranking for LGBTI rights. Mainly because of the violence, so this fits in with that picture.”

Intersex stands for the I from LGBTQIA+. This group of people was born in a body with both male and female characteristics. With the exhibition, the makers hope to increase social awareness about the existence of gender diversity.

After the destruction, that need has only become clearer, says Mir Abe of the NNID. “This is horrifying, especially because it’s aimed so directly at the faces.”

“It doesn’t seem to be random vandalism, but a targeted action,” Abe continues. It illustrates that this exhibition is very much needed to improve the position of intersex people. As a society, we must draw attention to this and take our responsibility.”

The Open Mind Foundation will file a report. In any case, the exhibition can be viewed at the Stationsplein until 6 June. This week is also in Alkmaar the Pride week with all kinds of activities and next Saturday the canal parade. “The portraits will be replaced as soon as possible. The opening showed that many people support the exhibition. That was wonderful.”
