The defender, whose contract expires, asks not to play. White calls him but yellow remains: does he go to the stands?

Matteo Delbue

January 17 – 08:38 – MONZA

A case broke out in Monza. Armando Izzo has asked not to take the field this afternoon in the match against league leaders Frosinone. A rumor circulated yesterday morning, which was then confirmed directly by coach Paolo Bianco in the press conference: “Izzo asked not to play even though he has no physical problems. The player is fine, but he made this request for a contractual issue”. Izzo is in fact linked to Monza by a contract expiring at the end of the season: already in the summer the defender had written on social media that he had not received any proposal which he considered adequate from the Brianza management. In the midst of the winter transfer window, the discussion on Izzo’s future naturally reignited: a dialogue between the parties which, evidently, is still far from reaching a shared solution. “These are situations already experienced with other players at the beginning of the season – Bianco analyzed – What matters however is the group: everyone is important but no one is indispensable. Armando has made this choice: I take note of it as a coach, the club will take note of it in turn. Everyone is free to make the choices they want”.

However, Izzo’s request not to play was followed by the decision to include the defender in the squad list made official last night. So what will happen this afternoon? Izzo could be regularly on the bench or sitting in the stands or not even in the stadium. Many doubts but also a certainty. Izzo’s choice makes some noise, but above all it deprives the red and white rearguard of its technical and charismatic leader. A very heavy absence from a footballing point of view against league leaders Frosinone, one of the most delicate matches of the season taking into account that for Monza it comes after the defeat (with many defensive hesitations) in Chiavari. Alvini’s team, on the other hand, has just returned from 11 useful results in a row: the Lazio team’s last defeat dates back to 18 October, against Monza. In Izzo’s place, Bianco should field Filippo Delli Carri in the center of defense, with Luca Ravanelli still employed as the right-hand man. “We face a Frosinone team that I know well and that has great enthusiasm and light-heartedness – analyzed the coach from Monza – For us it is the right opportunity to get back down in the table: we still have room for improvement, also because we have players who for various reasons have yet to demonstrate their potential such as Colpani, Petagna and Alvarez”.
