Sep Vanmarcke will stop cycling immediately. The 34-year-old Belgian has to do that because he has heart problems, reports his employer Israel-Premier Tech.
“It is very sad and painful to announce the end of my career in this way,” said Vanmarcke. “At the same time, I am grateful that the problems with my heart were discovered in time. I’m going to take the time now to be with my family, accept the situation and think about what I want to do in the future. My whole life has been devoted to cycling. Cycling will always be my passion.”
Vanmarcke started as a professional at Topsport Vlaanderen fourteen years ago and ended up at Garmin in 2011. Two years later he switched to Belkin, the successor to Rabobank. There he rode as one of the classic specialists until 2016, when the team was now called LottoNL-Jumbo. He then cycled for EF Pro Cycling and Israel-Premier Tech.
Vanmarcke finished second in Paris-Roubaix in 2013 and third in the Tour of Flanders in both 2014 and 2016.
