The Public Prosecution Service will prosecute five security guards for involvement in the death of a visitor at the Breda Barst festival in 2022. The security guards are suspected of complicity in culpable homicide.
Three years ago, a 37-year-old Polish man died at the festival in Breda. He is said to have caused a nuisance and been aggressive. The man was removed from the site and is said to have become unwell when security guards tried to get him under control. The security guards restrained him until the police arrived. When officers arrived, the man was no longer breathing.
The officers immediately started to resuscitate him. Later, ambulance crews took over. The man was taken to hospital in critical condition. He died there a day later.
Security guards prosecuted
At the time, six security guards were suspected of involvement in the visitor’s death. Four of them, aged between 19 and 59 at the time, come from Roosendaal, Breda, Dongen and Tilburg.
Now the Public Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute five of the six security guards for complicity in culpable homicide. It is not yet clear why the sixth will not be prosecuted. “That will be discussed during the public hearing,” says a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service. It took a very long time to decide whether or not to prosecute. This is because a lot of research has been done, the Public Prosecution Service spokesperson explains.
It is not yet known when the case will be heard. That will probably be in the new year. The security guards are allowed to await the trial in freedom.
