The search for a successor to the shot Nuri Sahin has apparently led the bosses of Borussia Dortmund to the foot of the Austrian Alps. According to media reports, sports managing director Lars Ricken and BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl in Salzburg came together with Niko Kovac. The ideas of the possible partners should diverge.

As the “Ruhr Nachrichten” report, the leadership team of the troubled Bundesliga club met Niko Kovac on Monday afternoon to convince him of an engagement as a BVB coach.

According to “RN”, BVB made contact with the former Bayern coach last week. The subject of the talks is therefore a contract until the end of the season, which is extended under certain conditions.

However, the 53-year-old clearly expressed that he does not want to be a fireman. Rather, Kovac wanted to build something with BVB in the long term.

According to “Sky”, the meeting between Kovac and the BVB expedition is said to have taken place at the weekend.

BVB: Kovac only a “small solution”?

According to the TV station, the ideas of the Dortmunders bite the Kovacs. Ricken and Co. probably only see a temporary solution in the unifying trainer – in order to present a “big solution” in summer. Sebastian Hoeneß and Roger Schmidt should be considered the desired candidates of the black yellow.

If negotiations between the Dortmunders and Kovac fail, it is possible that U19 coach Mike Tullberg will remain in office until the end of the season.

BVB had separated from Nuri Sahin last Wednesday and thus drawn the consequences of the negative series with four defeats since the beginning of the year.

Kovac trained in his career as a football teacher, among others, Eintracht Frankfurt (Cup winner 2018) and FC Bayern (champion 2019). Most recently, he worked for VfL Wolfsburg from 2022 to 2024.
