Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Aleix García has asked the home fans for forgiveness after the 7-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. “This hurts. I would like to apologize to the fans. They were incredible,” said the double goalscorer after the humiliating defeat.

At a glance: Bayer’s highest defeats / CL record games

It was the Werkself’s second highest in Champions League history after the 7-1 defeat in spring 2012. In the upcoming Bundesliga game against Freiburg, the 28-year-old Spaniard is hoping for the support of the fans again: “We need them on Sunday to take another step forward.”

García’s disappointment runs deep: “It’s going to be a tough night. The result is tough, we still have to improve a lot as a team. We have a lot of potential.” After his first defeat as Werkself coach, coach Kasper Hjulmand was also noticeably under the impression of the bitter result: “We are feeling a lot of pain right now. Those are big numbers. We are injured. We have to shake it off and look forward.”

At the same time, the Dane also thanked the spectators: “Our fans were incredible. I hope we can give them something back on Sunday.” Bayer sports director Simon Rolfes emphasized: “The result really hurts. But I think the boys have always shown that they can learn from it and grow from it, and that’s how we’ll approach it.”
