Second-hand continues to be a trend – the internet is the most important driver

The trade in clothing that has already been worn is still in vogue. The consulting company PWC assumes “that the volume of the second-hand fashion market in Germany will increase from around 3.5 billion euros in 2022 to five to six billion euros by 2025,” as announced on Thursday. As early as May, the German Trade Association forecast growth of eight percent to around 15 billion euros for the current year for the entire market with used goods.

For comparison: In 2019, sales of second-hand goods were still 10.6 billion euros. The used goods segment is growing faster than the retail trade as a whole, it was said at the time.

The data are also consistent with a recent, albeit non-representative, PWC survey of around 500 respondents on second-hand clothing. More than half of those surveyed (56 percent) have already bought used adult fashion, and another 14 percent are considering doing so. Among younger consumers who were born between the 1990s and the end of the 2000s, 64 percent stated that they had already bought used clothing. (dpa)
