Sebastian Madsen announces solo record: This is how the first single “Sei Nur Du Selbst” sounds

Sebastian Madsen, singer of the rock group Madsen of the same name, has felt “corona frustration, boredom and lovesickness” at the same time in recent years. This combination led to a high consumption of soul music, which gave him the idea of writing his own songs. We will be presented with the result in autumn 2022 on his first solo album, the new single “Sei Nur Du Selbst” is already available.

Sebastian Madsen brings tribulation on board

The musician was inspired by Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield and Amy Winehouse, according to the press release for the upcoming record. Madsen recorded the new single in the same studio in Wendland that his band also uses as a recording studio. He was able to win over his brother Johannes as producer and Drangsal also made his contribution to the track.

Although he had been a fan of the musician for a long time, he had never met Distress personally. “After I got his number from friends and wrote him, he called me and said, ‘No matter what you ask, I’ll definitely say yes,'” says Madsen, who is very happy about the cooperation.

Lovesickness and the question of the self

So the two got together to process the lovesickness of the singer into a soul-pop number on “Sei Nur Du Selbst”. “Just be yourself sings the guy on the radio / just be yourself is in my horoscope / but how does it work? / Just be yourself says the beautiful yoga woman / send your light into the world / it looks so easy for her / for everyone else too,” Madsen reports of the problem of not being able to follow the “most annoying wisdom of all time”.

The basic requirement is simply missing: to know who or what this self actually is – especially if you have just separated. “Be yourself / just listen to your heart / without you it just kind of beats the wrong way / believe in yourself and be who you are / without you I just don’t know who that is,” the lyrics continue.

The new album is said to contain soul, pop and disco tracks

A “light-footed piano melody” accompanies “lively horns” on this “sarcastic soul-pop number”, as the press release aptly describes the character of the song. From the upcoming tracks of the solo album, fans can expect “songs that alternate between soul and pop”, but also “a bit of disco or head singing”, the singer has already announced.

The solo career does not stand in the way of the band Madsen

Sebastian Madsen “has long wanted to make an album that reflects my passion for music outside of Madsen”. He would also like to be active as a solo artist in the long term and “concerts with a large live cast including background vocals and wind ensemble [zu] to play.”

But that is by no means a danger for his band Madsen: “Madsen will continue to exist – we are even having the best time together that we have ever had. We’re playing the coolest concerts ever and we’re also working on new stuff,” the musician said in a statement on Instagram.
