Oscar winner Sean Penn (63) will release his documentary about Ukraine on Paramount+ in mid-September.
The streaming service released the trailer for “Superpower” on Wednesday (local time). The actor and director (“Milk”, “Mystic River”) presented the film at the Berlinale in February.
Penn and his partner Aaron Kaufman wanted to make a documentary about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the country before the Russian invasion. They happened to meet the President on February 24, 2022, just as the Russian war of aggression began. The film is primarily a portrait of Zelensky, with whom the filmmakers spoke several times.
The trailer shows scenes of war, with Penn at the front, in bombed-out houses and talking to soldiers and affected citizens. Penn became an unintended front-line witness in this historic “David and Goliath” battle, according to the Paramount+ description.
