Scotland plans to hold a second independence referendum on October 19, 2023

  • The consultation will ask voters the same question as the one held in 2014: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

The chief minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeonannounced on Tuesday that it intends to convene a “consultative” referendum on independence of the British region October 19, 2023. However, Sturgeon does not have the authorization of the Government of London, whose prime minister, Boris Johnson, has already stated his refusal to authorize a second consultation.

In a speech to the self-governing Holyrood Parliament, Sturgeon stated that the plebiscite must be “legal” and “constitutional”, and will pose the same question to voters as the one held in 2014: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”
