Sporting Lisbon played its Champions League game against Olympique Marseille on Tuesday evening. The decisive scene in the game: a volley from Emerson that led to his sending off.

In the 2-1 (0-1) win over Marseille, Sporting played the entire second half in the majority after the Brazilian had to leave the field with a yellow-red card in stoppage time in the first half.

Curious thing about it: Emerson actually got a penalty with his action when the score was 1-0 for the French. In a duel with Sporting’s Maxi Araujo, Emerson went down theatrically, and referee Rade Obrenovic (Slovenia) initially decided on a penalty. The VAR intervened – and according to the images, Obrenovic reversed his decision. Emerson, who had already been cautioned with a yellow card, didn’t get a penalty, but had to leave the pitch because of the swallow and yellow-red.

Lisbon turns the game around with the advantage

The left-back did a disservice to his team, which had led thanks to Igor Paixao’s remarkable goal (14th minute of the game). Lisbon became more and more numerous.

Marseille concentrated almost exclusively on defense and didn’t allow anything for a long time. But thanks to substitute Catamo (69′), Sporting deservedly equalized and pushed for the winning goal, which another joker, Alisson Santos (86′), scored shortly before the end.

Next VAR use in the final phase

But that wasn’t enough – the VAR was used again in the hectic final phase: Araujo pushed his opponent over with his chest and was shown the red card. Again there was the intervention, this time the decision was not reversed, but weakened: Araujo was allowed to continue with yellow.

Despite being outnumbered, Marseille once again pressed for an equalizer, but they were unable to do so. Tragic hero of the game from OM’s perspective: Emerson, who wanted a penalty and was sent off the pitch instead.

Thanks to their success, Sporting overtook Marseille in the table and is sixth after the third matchday. Marseille fell back to 18th place (3rd points).
