He only took over Zimbabwe in 2024. Now Michael Nees has to go again. A balance sheet was his undoing.
Michael Nees’ chapter as coach of the Zimbabwe national team is over. As the national association ZIFA announced on Wednesday, the contract with the 58-year-old German has been terminated.
Nees took over in July 2024, but was only able to win two of 16 games during his tenure. Under his leadership, Zimbabwe remained winless in ten games in the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and clearly missed out on taking part in the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
“The association takes this opportunity to warmly thank Mr Nees for his efforts and contribution to Zimbabwe football during his tenure,” said a statement: “His dedication to the sport and his commitment to the national structures are greatly appreciated.”
Before his involvement in Zimbabwe, Nees had, among other things, looked after the national teams of the Seychelles and Rwanda.
