Wildcard starter Nastasja Schunk (Mainz) caused the first major surprise at the WTA tournament in Hamburg by moving into the round of 16.
The left-handed left-hander led to world ranking position 288 won her first match in the main field of WTA competition for almost three years against the number six and 215 places higher, Japanese Moyuka Uchijima 7: 5, 6: 3.
In the round of the top 16, the 21-year-old meets either the Serb Alexandra Krunic or the Hungarian Dalma Galfi.
Her opponent apparently surprised Schunk, who had not come out of the qualification on the tour at the WTA tournament in IASI/Romania in August 2022 in August 2022 or had opened at under-class tournaments.
Both players managed several breaks before Schunk made the preliminary decision by winning the first sentence. Afterwards, Uchijima hardly found the game back, and Schunk transformed her third match ball after a total of 106 minutes.
