So far only German passport

Schalke professional Mehmet Aydin (21) wants to play internationally for Turkey in the future. The 21-year-old midfielder, who played a total of 22 times for German junior teams, made this decision after discussions with the Turkish national coach Stefan Kuntz. The winger, who has made 13 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, mostly on the right, confirmed this to Funke Mediengruppe.

“He contacted me last summer and showed me a real perspective – that impressed me,” said Aydin. The professional born in Würselen near Aachen has Turkish roots. Therefore, a dressing change is possible.

In order to actually be nominated for international matches of the Turkish national team, Aydin is currently trying to get a Turkish passport, so far he only has a German one. “I thought about it for a long time and the decision was anything but easy for me,” commented the Schalke player. According to “Funke” information, the Turkish association hopes to be able to call Aydin into the extended squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers in Armenia and against Croatia at the end of March.
