Mourning at Schalke 04: Long-time treasurer Josef Schnusenberg died at the age of 83.
Second division club Schalke 04 mourns the loss of its former board member Josef Schnusenberg. The long-time treasurer and later chairman of the board died on Friday night at the age of 83 after a serious illness, as the club announced.
In 1994, Schnusenberg took over responsibility for finances at the severely ailing Royal Blues. The self-employed tax advisor was instrumental in realizing the construction of the arena.
His saying is legendary: “Once we’ve paid for the arena, we’ll be swimming in money.” Schnusenberg chaired the board from 2007 to 2010, and Schalke had now become a regular guest in the Champions League. In 2013 he was appointed to the honorary presidency.
