Portuguese sprinter Ericsson Tavares was badly injured in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the World Indoor Championships in Torun on Sunday.

Tavares started second in his team, and as soon as he entered the first corner, the Jamaican Delano Kennedy hit Tavares’ Achilles tendon with his spikes. Tavares immediately slowed down and grimaced in pain.

Portuguese anchor João Coelho said after the race that Tavares cried after crossing the finish line. Tavares, who injured his Achilles tendon, was carried off the field on a stretcher.

– The situation looked really serious, Coelho says.

– You should be careful there.

Coelho is furious about the situation.

– Silly! If I had done this, I would have been kicked out immediately, he says.

Portugal finished fifth in the final. The difference to third place Jamaica was about 2.5 seconds.

The Belgian team won silver and the United States won gold.
