Today, Friday, September 26, the official account in X (former Twitter) of the Argentine Federal Police was hacked and used to disseminate messages promoting the cryptocurrency $ Mira. From 10:30 in the morning, posts began to appear that invited to join an alleged “Airdrop” with promises of immediate benefits, accompanied by videos that alluded to a collaboration with Mira Network. For more than two hours, the contents remained online while the force tried to recover control of their networks.
After noon, the PFA managed to recover access and issued an official statement in which it recognized the attack: “The Argentine Federal Police communicates that the official account of this institution in the social network X was the target of an international computer attack, whose purpose was to manipulate institutional identity and disseminate undue messages”.
In the same text, the force sought to take peace of mind: “The Argentine Federal Police reaffirms its commitment to the security of information and transparency”and clarified: “All communications issued from this moment correspond to the legitimate administration of the institution and must be considered as officials”. In addition, he informed that “The case was already judicialized and all necessary measures are being deployed to identify and sanction those responsible in accordance with the law”.
Today, what happened with the Libra cryptocurrency, when months ago the official account of President Javier Milei spread a message recommending it. At that time many users thought of a hacking, but then it was learned that it had not been an intrusion, but a deliberate publication that ended in a collapse of its value and was indicated as a scam. The contrast between that episode and that of the PFA reveals an uncomfortable conclusion: either by external attacks or by deceptive official messages, the confidence in the verified accounts of the state is increasingly eroded.
