The apparently offensive statements about Jürgen Klopp have consequences for referee David Coote. After initially being suspended, he has now lost his job entirely.

The English referee organization PGMOL has terminated the employment relationship with referee David Coote with immediate effect in light of several serious allegations. The 42-year-old had already been provisionally suspended in recent weeks after a video emerged in which Coote insulted German star coach Jürgen Klopp. There is also an accusation of drug abuse.

“David Coote’s conduct has been found to constitute a serious breach of the terms of his employment contract and his position is considered untenable,” the PGMOL said on Monday. The referee can still appeal the decision.

Coote made headlines with comments against Klopp, former team manager of Liverpool FC. A corresponding video appeared on social media in November. It is still unclear when the video was recorded and whether it is really authentic.

It is associated with a Liverpool game against Burnley FC in July 2020. After the 1-1 draw, Klopp complained about Coote. He did not punish fouls against Reds players. In the video, Coote described Klopp as “arrogant” – but this is one of the more harmless statements about the coach.

Coote was one of the experienced referees in the Premier League, having refereed top-flight games since 2018.
