Four days after triumphing at the Club World Cup, SC Magdeburg managed to draw in the Champions League. The Hungarian runner-up Telekom Veszprém had a 35:35 (16:16).
The best Magdeburg thrower was Omar Ingi Magnusson with eight goals, and goalkeeper Nikola Portner made 17 saves. The SCM is still third in its group.
The two teams were equal from the start and showed fast handball, initially with a slight advantage for Magdeburg (5:4/9.). Ironically, Veszprém got the first lead in Magdeburg’s majority, but SCM was able to regain the lead, led by three goals (15:12/23.) and still went into the break with a draw.
After the break, the game continued at a similar pace and remained balanced because Portner made a good save in the SCM goal, but Magdeburg made too many technical errors up front. Again in the majority, the SCM fell behind, but was able to equalize again (30:30/52.). In the hectic final phase, Veszprém’s Rasmus Lauge (60th) saw the red card after the third time penalty.
In the following week, the SCM travels to the Danish representative in Gudme in the Champions League, and in between receives SC DHfK Leipzig in the Bundesliga for a duel in the east.
