Coach Christian Streich from SC Freiburg will miss record scorer Nils Petersen. “It will be a great loss for us – personally and sportingly. We will miss him in every training session and on the pitch,” said Streich two days before the game on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) against Hertha BSC. Petersen had announced the end of his career after this season on Wednesday afternoon.
“After almost 16 years of professional football, it is with a heavy heart that I am giving up my shoes at the end of the season. Thanks in advance to everyone who has accompanied me on my way, wished me luck week after week, congratulated me after victories and comforted me after defeats,” wrote the offensive man on Instagram and thanked his former clubs and their supporters “for the wonderful years with the most beautiful side thing in the world, which will always remain the main thing for me”.
Petersen, who is SCF’s record goalscorer with 104 goals, explained: “Everything that has an end also had a beginning. And a new beginning is not the same as the end. you hear from me Promised. Now I’ll invest everything again so that I can then say: ‘You should go when it’s most beautiful.'”
Streich himself was informed the day before. “He’s at peace with himself. And I think it’s the right thing to do,” said the 57-year-old. Petersen still shows degrees in every training session, “no one else can do that”. That is why he is also a candidate to replace Michael Gregoritsch (28), who was blocked against Hertha. The use of defender Philipp Lienhart (26), who still has problems after his thigh injury, is still in the balance.
