SC Freiburg: Christian Günter’s long-running series ends after 134 games

Freiburg’s captain

The Bundesliga game against FC Augsburg in February 2019 (5-1) was the last game that Christian Günter missed before SC Freiburg made 134 appearances – all of them from the start – without a break. The currently longest running streak of a Bundesliga professional will now break, however, because the 29-year-old saw his fifth yellow card of the current season in the last duel with VfL Bochum and is suspended for the upcoming game against Bayer Leverkusen.

The all-time record in the German top flight is held by former goalkeeper Sepp Maier, who played 442 times without a break for FC Bayern between 1966 and 1979. In the other top leagues in Europe, it is mainly goalkeepers who set the records: Franco Tancredi (258) in the Italian Serie A, Fabien Cool (307) in the French Ligue 1 and Brad Friedel (310) in the English Premier League. Only in the Spanish LaLiga is the still active Iñaki Williams from Athletic Club from Bilbao responsible for the top value, whose streak came to an end after 251 games in a row due to an injury.
