SC Freiburg: Brentford transfer from Flekken becomes the second most expensive goalkeeper export

Before transfer to London

According to his own statement, Mark Flekken (29) from SC Freiburg will “fulfill a childhood dream” with his transfer to FC Brentford. The Netherlands international goalkeeper said the “Picture“-Zeitung: “I grew up on the German border in Holland, but in my youth it was above all the English league that I regularly rooted for.” The Premier League club will use the exit clause anchored in Flekken’s contract in Activate an amount of around 13 million euros, making it the second most expensive goalkeeper export in Bundesliga history.

In 2018, Bernd Leno (31, Fulham) also moved to London, Arsenal paid 25 million euros for the former Bayer goalkeeper. If you look at all goalkeeper changes in the Bundesliga, Flekken will be in the top 5 in terms of transfer fee ahead of Marc-André ter Stegen (31, Barça).

When asked if he had spoken to loan player Kevin Schade (21) before deciding to move to London club Brentford, Flekken said: “The way the club had tried to get my services over the past two years was not at all really needed to talk to Kevin. I had a very good feeling about that too.” Freiburg talent Schade went on loan to the “Bees” in January and is said to be committed for around 25 million euros – this sum would lead to a record transfer within SC. And Flekken is also in the top 10 of the most expensive SC departures.

SC Freiburg’s Flekken with the most clean vests: “It’s a great award”

“I was here for five years. The start wasn’t nice because I had to be patient for two years. I sat on the bench for the first year, but unfortunately I injured myself in the second year. Of course, I was all the happier when I got the chance to play. I just hope that I’ve been able to repay the trust of everyone at the club. We definitely part on good terms,” said the Dutchman, who kept his goal clean 13 times in the Bundesliga this season and thus had the most clean sheets to show.

“The best thing for me on the last day of the game was when I saw the result of Wolfsburg and Hertha and I was aware that I had the most clean sheets in the league. It’s a great award. For me, but also for the whole team,” said Flekken, who could only have been caught by VfL goalkeeper Koen Casteels (30). SC Freiburg already has the replacement for the future Londoner: Homegrown Noah Atubolu (21) should not only be number one in Germany’s U21s in the future.
