The Vatican thriller “Conclave” is increasingly becoming an Oscar favorite in Hollywood.
Edward Berger’s church -political drama “Conclave” won the main prize for the best drama ensemble on Sunday evening (February 23rd) at the SAG Awards. The top line-up with Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini was awarded the members of the Sag-Aftra actor union for their outstanding team performance.
“Conclave” prevails
Rossellini dedicated her words to Pope Francis, who is currently being treated in the hospital, and wished him a “quick recovery”. Fiennes used his acceptance speech to emphasize the power of the community: The honor stands for the community and its “outstanding importance for our work and for the world”. It is no surprise that “conclave” is considered one of the top candidates for the Oscars. As early as mid -February, the film was able to dust four awards at the British BAFTAs, including the price for the best film.
SAG Awards 2025: Further winners of the evening
Timothée Chalamet, who was awarded Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” as the best actor, provided one of the greatest surprise moments. He left Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”) behind him. Both actors are also nominated for the Oscars.
Demi Moore was the best actress for her role in “The Substance”.
In the supporting roles, Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) and Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) triumphed, who positioned themselves as strong Oscar candidates with other awards.
There was a bitter disappointment for the makers of the romantic dramedy “Anora”, who left the Critics Choice, Producers Guild, Directors Guild and Independent Spirit Awards. Despite five nominations, the highly traded musical film “Wicked” could not take a single price home.
“Only Murders in the Building” was surprisingly able to triumph as the best comedy ensemble and prevail against favorites such as “The Bear” and “Hacks”. Martin Short also received the award as the best actor in a comedy series, but was unable to personally accept it due to a covid disease.
The SAG Awards are considered an important guide for the Oscar ceremony, as actresses represent the largest group of voters at the Academy Awards. Whether yesterday’s winners will also prevail at the Oscars will be shown next Sunday (02.03.).
