Satisfied Wimbledon debutant Gijs Brouwer feels that he is growing to the top level

Gijs Brouwer played for the first time in the Wimbledon main draw last week. The 27-year-old tennis player from Venhuizen flew out in the first round, but has proven himself. “It was a very nice experience. I look back on it with great pleasure,” he says at home from West Friesland.

As a qualifier, Brouwer reached the Wimbledon main draw for the first time. In a beautiful entourage he played on Court 1 against world top Alexander Zverev. “I thought it was cool to play against him on that track,” says Brouwer.

In the end, Brouwer lost to Zverev in three sets, but twice he managed to pull a tiebreak out of the fire. “I have a good feeling about it. Even after seeing it again on TV. It was a nice pot. It just shows that I’m not far from the level I want to go to. I’ve also seen there that a good preparation and a good strategy pays off.”

Initially, Brouwer was supposed to play on Tuesday, but because of the bad weather in London, he had to wait until Thursday. “I was just really looking forward to it and I had to wait a little longer. But it actually didn’t bother me at all. It was just a pity that my father had to leave and couldn’t see my match.”

Next week Brouwer will leave for the United States to play a number of tournaments. There he hopes to qualify for the US Open.
