New details on the Sara Piffer accident: The 19-year-old died after a collision with a car-investigations against the driver.
In the case of the fatal accident of the young cyclist Sara Piffer in northern Italy, new details have become known. As the local police said, a 70-year-old driver from the region is being investigated for killing in road traffic.
The man is said to have lost control when overtaking another vehicle and collided head-on with the 19-year-old. Witnesses had confirmed the course, said a spokesman for the German Press Agency.
Sara Piffer was traveling with her brother to work in the accident. The two drove a country road near the city of Trento, just about ten kilometers from their place of residence. While the brother was apparently able to dodge in time and remained unharmed, Piffer was hit by the oncoming car.
The news of the death of the young athlete caused a deep dismay in the region and the cycling community. The President of the Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, expressed his sympathy for the family, friends and the local community. “We share the grief for this terrible misfortune,” said Fugatti.
Her team Mendelspeck recalled in a message to the 19-year-old and praised her as a talented and committed driver. “She leaves a gap that should not be filled,” it said.
