The story of “Santa Evita”: between reality and myth

In July 1952, Eva Perón, affectionately known as Evita, dies of uterine cancer. She is the first lady of Argentina, second wife of President Juan Domingo Perón, but she is also her and above all one politician and a trade unionist revered by the people.

In the aftermath of his death, which occurred at the age of 33, his body is embalmed to become the worshiped relic of the people, a body that will not find rest and a worthy burial for a quarter of a century.

The story of the endless wanderings of that corpse that became an object of worship, of what it ended up representing, of its value with respect to the political history of the country, and of the woman who “possessed” it in life unfolds in seven episodes divided into more temporal plans: that of 1973 – which follows the vicissitudes of a journalist willing to do everything to reconstruct his odyssey – and that of the flashbacks that retrace the troubled existence of Eve from infancy to death.

The real Eve, the Eve of legend

Eva Duarte’s true story is both tragic and uplifting. An inchildhood marked by discrimination and poverty – she was the illegitimate daughter of a landowner, mocked for her origins by her fellow villagers -, a combative adolescence crowned by the move to Buenos Aires, just fifteen, to pursue I dream of becoming a movie star and a sparkling adulthood as Perón’s wife.

Since that moment, Evita has never sat on her laurels, she has always been on the front line in defending the weakest. The harassment she suffered as a child had led her to develop a fierce hatred for injustices, making her the champion of women and the poor.

Adored by the people, Perón was most feared by her husband’s political and military class. Even in her death: her perfectly preserved body was the untouchable envelope of a saint, the symbol of a nation, and for this she found no peace for a long time.

A shocking series

Santa Evita is a multifaceted series: it is a biopic divided between reality and legend, it is a historical reconstruction, it is a political portrait, it is a passionate drama, it is a heartfelt tribute, and a horror story worthy of more perverse and morbid gothic fairy tale.

Santa Evita is a realist novel, the chronicle of Eve’s painful existence before fame. It’s a glitzy Hollywood blockbuster focused on the years of stardom. It is a gothic novel, grotesque and uncanny that retraces the stages of the absurd journey of her body and the numerous wax copies produced to mislead the discovery.

Eva’s choice not to undergo surgery, the alleged lobotomy carried out shortly before death to quell her impetuousness, the obsession with the corpse hatched by the doctor who made him incorruptible and that of the military officer who kept him in the cellar for years seem to be the tale by a horror writer like Edgar Allan Poe.

It will hardly happen again to witness such a fascinating and horrible series, even more so because it is inspired by a true story, like that of Santa Evita.
