There’s no sugarcoating it: the start to the season under Sandro Wagner was weak. The expectations of the new coach were high, but so far he has not lived up to them. But anyone who reflexively questions the coach is not thinking far enough. Despite all the starting problems, Wagner is the right man for this job.
Wagner represents a new generation of trainers: courageous, communicative, modern. As a player and as an expert, he has shown that he understands football. He wants to create, not just manage. And one thing Wagner will never do is give up. He sees the crisis as an opportunity: “If you get out of a situation that is definitely not that cool, that also gives you good strength.” He wants to learn, develop and prove it to everyone.
In addition, Wagner brings something with him that cannot be taught – personality. He polarizes like few others in German football, but he also inspires and can give Augsburg the shine that the club has been missing for years. He is approachable, speaks the language of the players and has the ability to transform emotions into energy.
Of course Wagner also has to deliver. His ideas must be reflected in results soon, otherwise the credit threatens to disappear. But perseverance is required right now – from the club, fans and those responsible alike. Breaking up now would be a serious mistake.
Because: Sandro Wagner represents a vision, not a snapshot. Anyone who gives him the time to develop his idea now could end up being rewarded with more than just points – namely with a team that stands for something.
