The late Pope was a passionate football fan. His heart’s club now provides him with the honor in a special way.
The traditional Argentine club San Lorenzo is reminiscent of its most famous follower with several gestures: Pope Francis. As club president Marcelo Moretti explained, the club’s new stadium is to be named after the late Pontifex. The club boss received the promise personally from the Pope last year during a visit to the Vatican. The construction of the arena with space for 55,000 spectators is scheduled to begin this year.
The official mourning phase is already running at San Lorenzo. Since the death of Francis at the beginning of the week, the chapel has been closed on the club area – but from Wednesday it will be open every day until 9 p.m., as Moretti announced. Fans and mourners can pray and say goodbye to an improvised altar with the portrait of the Pope.
San Lorenzo will also commemorate his honorary member in sports. In the league game against Rosario Central on Saturday, the club will run with a special jersey.
