Samsung Galaxy A22 5G on sale at Aldi: is it worth buying?

This week Aldi Nord and Süd are offering a Samsung smartphone for only 159 euros. The Galaxy A22 supports 5G and comes with a large battery. But is it worth buying from a discounter? TECHBOOK did the check.

Currently selling both Aldi north as well as Aldi south the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G. The smartphone was launched in June 2021 and offers features that are primarily aimed at beginners. That means solid basic functions at a good price. Nevertheless, there are also some highlights with the support of 5G and the 5000 mAh battery. We took a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G and reveal whether it’s worth buying from Aldi.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G with good performance

With its 6.6-inch TFT display, the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G is one of the larger smartphones. The resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels (FullHD+) is perfectly fine and the device can definitely keep up with more expensive smartphones with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. In these points, the device is far better equipped than its namesake without 5G, which only has an HD+ resolution. The two models should therefore not be confused. The smartphone also looks good thanks to the narrow edges, the modern camera design and the subtle colors. It’s just a pity that Aldi only has the dark gray version. Buyers have to do without the color versions white or violet.

The Galaxy A22 5G is delivered with Android 11. However, an update to the current Android 12 is planned for this summer, so that users will then be up to date when it comes to the system. The system can be secured either with the fingerprint sensor on the side or alternatively with unlocking by face, PIN or pattern.

The special feature of the smartphone is the support of 5G – not found very often in this price range. The Samsung Galaxy A22 5G also offers equipment with strong key data. This includes, above all, the Mediatek Dimensity 700. The octa-core chip has eight cores with a maximum clock speed of 2.2 GHz. There is also 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of expandable storage. In terms of performance, the chip is just below the level of a Snapdragon 730G. That’s pretty good for a smartphone under 200 euros and perfectly adequate for classic applications such as playing YouTube videos, surfing the web and chatting.

The battery is generously dimensioned with its 5000 mAh. Especially with Samsung, you don’t find such a capacity very often. Charging, on the other hand, is a bit sluggish, as it does so with a maximum of 15 watts. Users also have to do without wireless charging. All in all, however, an all-round good equipment for little money, which is why the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G has also made it into the list of the best smartphones up to 200 euros.

The camera is quite suitable for everyday use. Samsung has installed a total of three sensors in a small rectangular camera module. The main sensor, a classic wide-angle, offers 48 megapixels and a reasonable aperture of f/1.8, which ensures good light capture. The ultra wide angle takes pictures with up to 5 megapixels, which is a bit small. The field of view is typically 115 degrees. Last but not least, there is a depth sensor, which is also quite tight at 2 megapixels. Its main purpose is to provide information for a better calculation of the depth of field in the photos.

The camera experts from DxOMark certify the Galaxy A22 5G good results with a high level of detail in outdoor shots and relatively low image noise in indoor shots and in the dark. On the other hand, there is also a certain irregularity in the display of colors, exposure problems that occur again and again in photos and videos, and a slight delay when the shutter is released. All in all, the camera of the Galaxy A22 5G is good for the occasional snapshot, but not for camera enthusiasts.
