Former world champion Shkodran Mustafi, currently without a club, could move to the Italian Serie B. Sampdoria Genoa is considering signing the 31-year-old defender, who started his professional career with the second division club in 2012 and made his way into the national team.

Sports director Andrea Mancini told the newspaper “Il Secolo XIX” when asked about the 31-year-old, who most recently played for UD Levante in Spain: “Maybe. There is a list of three to four names, there are not many players without a club. We are currently trying to determine who is physically fittest.” Sampdoria is looking for a short-term defender following the injury to central defender Alex Ferrari (to the squad overview).
Mustafi had recently ruled out the end of his career in the big Transfermarkt interview. After leaving Sampdoria for 8 million euros in August 2014, he played for Valencia FC for two years before moving on to Arsenal FC for 41 million euros. In the Bundesliga, the defender was only active for Schalke 04 for half a year in 2021.
After a thigh operation last November, he is currently keeping fit in Munich. “I just want to play for a few more years. I’m only 31 and of course I’ll try,” Mustafi recently said in an interview with TM. The motivation is that the recent past has been catastrophic: “I don’t want to say goodbye to football like that. No way.”
