Safety problem identified: Another recall of BYD vehicles does not harm the stock

BYD shares ended trading in Hong Kong at the start of the week 0.46 percent higher at HKD 97.95, building on their positive development on Friday. There was news from the company that had the potential for price losses.

BYD is recalling vehicles

As it became known on Friday, the Chinese car manufacturer BYD is immediately recalling 88,981 plug-in hybrids, according to a statement from the market regulator. The reason is a possible safety problem with the batteries. The recall comes just weeks after the company’s largest recall to date.

According to the statement, the recall affects Qin PLUS DM-i models produced between January 2021 and September 2023, which “may have reduced performance due to battery pack consistency issues during the production process.”

In extreme cases, driving in pure electric mode is therefore not possible. The recall is based on an investigation by the market regulator into possible defects.

Not the first callback

This is not the first recall for BYD in the current financial year. The Tesla competitor has already had to recall over 210,000 vehicles in 2025, including almost 7,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs, according to a Reuters section. It was only in October that the company announced its largest recall to date: more than 115,000 vehicles from the Tang and Yuan Pro series from 2015 to 2022 were affected due to design defects and battery-related safety risks.
