The tackling of the pedestrian crossings is done at the urgent request from the municipal council. Two years ago he came to the College van B and W for a plan of action to significantly improve road safety and visibility of crossing places.
A total of 81 pedestrian crossings in Assen were mapped, and was then analyzed where most accidents occur and which pedestrian crossings are experienced by residents as unsafe. Twelve locations were rolled out there, where a total of sixteen accidents have happened in recent years.
The College of Mayor and Aldermen has now first opted for three test locations to test different approaches because of the high costs. And those are the crossings on Hannie Schaftweg, Jan Fabriciusstraat and the Oostersingel. Next year it must become apparent whether the measures are effective.
In the meantime, Assen is also working on Stationsplein with a different national test, which must also promote the safe crossing of pedestrians and cyclists. Because there it crawls further from the cars and buses, with again pedestrian crossings on the square and a cycle path that runs right through it.
Since last year, the so-called LED on technology has been tested there, in which the municipality of Assen with road builder BAM Infra tries out a system of glowing shark teeth. The shark teeth with dynamic LED lighting will start as soon as cyclists and pedestrians use the crossings on Stationsplein. This test lasts two years.
