Rybakina wins first career Grand Slam title at Wimbledon

Elena Rybakina won Wimbledon on Saturday. The Kazakh tennis player was too strong for the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2). For Rybakina, currently number 23 in the world, it is the first time that she has won a grand slam tournament.

Prior to the match, Jabeur was named favorite. The world number two won the first set 3-6 and looked set to become the first female African tennis player ever to win a grand slam tournament. Rybakina, however, managed to turn the game around. She won the next two sets and thus the final.

Russian tennis players are not allowed to participate in this edition of the British tennis tournament because of the war in Ukraine. However, Rybakina, born in Moscow, has been playing under the Kazakh flag since 2018, which allowed her to participate. She became the first tennis player from Kazakhstan to win a grand slam tournament.

The Wimbledon final between the men is scheduled for Sunday. Defending champion Novak Djokovic will face Australian Nick Kyrgios.
