The changes will mainly affect paper boarding passes for the Irish airline’s low-cost flights

For those who fly with Ryanair Attention: from 12 November 2025 important introductions will be made novelty which you absolutely need to know to get on board. The change in sight concerns, in particular, the rules for check in: paper boarding passes, in fact, will no longer be allowed to travel on low-cost flights of the airline flying the Irish flag. Only digital versions will be allowed, which can be conveniently downloaded from the official website and app. What changes in practice for all travellers?

Check-in with Ryanair: the new rules

Passengers who fly with Ryanair from 12 November 2025 will only be able to board planes with the digital version of the boarding pass. After checking in online, the document will automatically appear on the airline’s app or website. According to it, the group wanted to simplify the journey, while at the same time reducing paper waste and airport costs. Reportedly, the digital boarding pass it would also be useful to improve customer service and make rebooking easier in case of delays or cancellations.

For Ryanair it is the “last step in the company’s digital transformation“. According to data released by the company, almost 80% of the 206 million passengers transported every year by the carrier already use the digital boarding pass. Dara Brady, Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer, also underlined that the innovations introduced will allow a “faster, smarter and more sustainable” travel experience.

How to take a Ryanair flight: the new procedure

To be able to fly with Ryanairpassengers, after booking the flight, will only have to do the online check-in. The system will send reminder emails starting 24 hours before departure. If you show up at the airport without having done this step, you will be able to board the plane by paying the so-called “check-in fee” of 55 euros in order to get your boarding pass at the gate. Online check-in can be done by all passengers via the official website or app, before arriving at the airport. As previously, you will have to confirm all the data in order to have the digital document on the app to show at the security checks and at the gate upon departure.

If your smartphone battery is flat or if your phone has been stolen, you can go to the gate to get a free boarding passprovided that check-in has been completed online previously. If this happens after the security checks, there will be no problems for passengers, since the data is already recorded in the company’s system. Even those who don’t have a smartphone or tablet can get a free boarding pass at the airport, provided that online check-in has been completed before arriving at the airport.
