French Open finalist Casper Ruud has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time.
The 23-year-old Norwegian also kept his chance to become number one in the world with the 6: 1, 6: 2, 6: 7 (4: 7), 6: 2 against the Frenchman Corentin Moutet. In order to reach for it, Ruud has to reach the final in New York.
Ruud now meets Italian Matteo Berrettini (26). The 2021 Wimbledon finalist defeated the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after 3:45 hours 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2), 6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 2 and moved for the third time after 2019 and 2021 advanced to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. Davidovich Fokina injured his knee in the fifth set.
Moutet (23) had lost in qualifying, but was a lucky loser in the main draw of the fourth Grand Slam of the season. After three wins, Ruud was the end of the line, especially in the first two sets the favorite, who was in fifth place, was superior before Moutet – ultimately in vain – fought against the defeat.
